Call me crazy...
but I'm actually THINKING of giving cloth diapers a try with the twins!!! I just feel so darn guilty about throwing them out into the environment, plus by the time they are out of them, we would have spent a small fortune. Did you know it can take upwards of 500+ years for them to biodegrade? Maybe I'm becoming the tree-hugger type (I'll post about that later). I have no idea where to start, but there was just an article in my local paper about the benefits and how much easier they are to use now. Anyone out there have any advice or brands that are good? I'd love to know...they are now 14 months old, so I have a while before they will be out of diapers!!!

i think that is great, i don't use them, but i think sarcasticmom did a whole write up on what works and doesn't. i know a friend who tried the seventh generation ones and said they don't work so well.
Funny you should ask. I just sent a friend an e-mail about this. I actually researched CD-ing E when she was about the same age. The only thing is that daycare wouldn't support it.

If it's more of an environmental issue than cost, you might want to check out gDiapers. They biodegrade in two weeks and are a cloth/disposable hybrid.

My friend, Jersey Baby, uses these on her 20 month old. I'm sure she'd be happy to help you out. (I looked into *these* for A...but daycare looked at me like I had three heads when I mentioned using them.)
My cousin C and good friend S use cloth diapers exclusively--both are pretty happy with them. A couple things to consider (since I was weighing all of this too):
--they are really easy to use, but you will have a lot of extra laundry
--they are a lot bulkier than traditional diapers
--some environmentalists actually say that disposables aren't that bad of an idea because all of the gunk (e coli, etc) that is in the poop is contained, rather than in our water supply. (not sure if I buy this, but I throw it out there)
--you will be washing a lot of poop out of them. (for me, this is the deal killer)

I used cloth on One Fish when she was an infant. Good thing too since she was a diaper rash magnet and according to the pediatrician, the cloth was one of the things that saved us. But, once she started day care and I was working full time again I just couldn't keep up (and the daycare certainly wasn't going to deal with it...). There are some great ones out there, but be prepared to have loooots of laundry. It's sort of nasty to wash the diapers with any other clothing, too, so they all had to be done separately. But, I did love the look of my little fishy in her fuzzy purple diaper cover!

I haven't tried cloth but I tried 7th Heaven and Carlitos leaked through them...back to pampers now.
I think I called them 7th heaven..I meant 7th generation...duh!
As Slacker Mama said, I've been using gDiapers on my 20 month old for a few months now and have nothing but good things to say about them. Just wish I had been doing it all along (from an environmental standpoint).
washing poo is a deal breaker for me! Screw it! LOL
I was raised in cloth diapers... but that was 30+ years ago and I don't know how the hell my mom did it. :-)
